Would you buy souvenirs when you’re on a trip? Do you love to receive a gift from friends? Do you want the gift you receive? Would you throw it away, keep in a corner or donate it?

Souvenir culture is common in Hong Kong. It occurs every time when you are on a trip. Once everyone knows you are going to somewhere else for holiday, they would ask you to buy something for him/her as a souvenir, including skincare products, sweets or clothing. Could it be called as souvenirs? I don’t think so. It’s just taking orders from friends without any revenue. And it’s annoying. You need to remember all your friends’ orders and buy it for them. The luggage weight on the return journey always over because of those products and have to pay the additional charge. If you rejected the ‘asking’ or missed one order, everyone knows that and you would be tagged as a stingy person.

These how many postcard I posted from Vienna.

My understanding of souvenirs is different to the souvenir culture. It’s a gift I am willing to buy for someone on a special occasion or a journey. It’s not compulsory. It is a blessing and love rather than an order. I tend to send a postcard when I’m on a trip to avoid buying something useless. It’s unique and warm. It’s also a cheaper and affordable souvenir on trips for a student. Of course, if you are sending more than 20 postcards on each journey, the expenditure on postcards and posting fee is huge.

Once, I sent a postcard to my friend, and she only received the address part. The postcard was divided into two. Only half of it has been sent to the right place, and the other half has been missing. It’s shocking, funny, and a bit sad. When I told this story to my friends, they didn’t believe it. OMG… It’s not a joke! Here is the photo.
